Met Section Members Volunteer at Soup Kitchen Holiday Party Print E-mail
Community Lunch Holiday Party On December 5, 2008, ASCE members helped to brighten the faces of more than 50 children at the Community Lunch Holiday Party at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Morningside Heights. Community Lunch is a soup kitchen run by the students of Columbia University serving disadvantaged people living in the area. Volunteers helped to decorate the room with balloons, streamers, lights, and snowflakes and prepared activity tables for children to decorate cupcakes and create arts and crafts such as snowmen, the Star of David, Three Kings crowns, and jewelry. Dinner was also provided for the kids and their parents. See the Met Section photo gallery for more pictures from this event.
 
Younger Members and Students Create Artwork at PS 85 Print E-mail
New York Cares Day Younger members and students from the ASCE Met Section joined over 8,000 volunteers by participating in New York Cares Day on October 18, 2008. This is an annual event organized by New York Cares that helps to revitalize New York City's public schools. ASCE's team of volunteers worked at P.S. 85 - Great Expectations School in the Bronx this year by painting murals in stairwells and on outside doors, painting line games such as hopscotch on the playground, repainting the school sign, and painting posters for the gym. YMF Takes Site Tour of JetBlue Terminal Construction at JFK Print E-mail
JetBlue Terminal Construction Site Tour On June 12, 2008, the Younger Member Forum organized a construction site tour of the new Terminal 5 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens. The construction of the $800 million airside and landside improvements for Terminal 5 is the largest infrastructure investment undertaken by JetBlue Airways since the New York City-based airline began flying in February 2000 and has been featured on the Extreme Engineering television series on the Discovery Channel. The unique design of Terminal 5 will utilize the front portion of the historic Eero Saarinen terminal as an entry point.

Younger Members Help to Revitalize PS 184 in Queens Print E-mail
Hands on New York Day

The Younger Member Forum joined over 5,500 volunteers across the city participating in Hands on New York Day on April 12, 2008. This is an annual event organized by New York Cares that helps revitalize local parks, gardens, playgrounds, and schools. The team of ASCE members traveled to PS 184 in Whitestone, Queens and helped to paint several classrooms and plant shrubs outside the school building. After the event, a celebration party was held for all of the Hands on New York Day volunteers at Stout in Midtown Manhattan.

Executive Forum Discusses "The State of Our Bridges" Print E-mail
 The Younger Member Forum held its Seventh Annual Executive Forum on February 21, 2008. The year's discussion focused on "The State of Our Bridges," a topic that has gained national attention following the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis last August. Over 100 young engineers attended the event and had a unique opportunity to meet prominent engineers involved with designing, constructing and maintaining bridges in the New York metropolitan area.
