Runway 13R-31L Reconstruction and Access Improvements Print E-mail
JFK Airport Runway The rehabilitating and widening of Runway 13R-31L at JFK Airport is no small task. At 14,572 feet in length—the second longest commercial runway in North America—the "Bay Runway" will require 208,000 yards of Portland cement concrete (enough to pave the field of every stadium in the National Football League with two feet of concrete), 200,000 tons of asphalt concrete (the weight of six Titanics), and 195,000 dowel bars (enough to stretch from JFK all the way to Orient Point on the East End of Long Island).

Met Section Hosts OSHA Sponsored Crane Safety Training Print E-mail
Crane Safety Training for Engineers and Supervisors On July 16, 2009, the Met Section welcomed ASCE's Construction Institute (CI) for the inaugural presentation of the OSHA-sponsored Crane Safety Training for Engineers and Supervisors. Matt Burkart, P.E., a construction safety expert with over 40 years in the construction industry and active committee leader with ASCE/CI and ASCE, presented the three-hour crane safety training to 75 attendees at the Ketch Restaurant in Lower Manhattan.

Stewart International Airport Access Improvement Project Print E-mail
Drury Lane Interchange on I-84The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year at airports. However, this past Thanksgiving, air passengers in the Hudson Valley region had an easier time getting to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York because of the recent opening of Exit 5A on Interstate 84 and new access roads leading to the airport. Paul Pasternak, P.E., of DMJM+Harris gave a presentation to the Met Section's Construction Group describing the Stewart International Airport Access Improvement Project on March 13, 2008 at Cooper Union in New York City.

Electronic Engineering Data in Construction Print E-mail
GPS Satellite ASCE members got to see a glimpse of the future of construction technology when Pete Melas, P.E. of the Office of Construction at NYSDOT's main office in Albany gave a presentation on "Electronic Engineering Data" at Cooper Union on March 13, 2008. The presentation was the start of a two-part lecture that also included a presentation of the Stewart International Airport Access Improvement Project, highlighting its use of innovative GPS-guided construction and inspection techniques. Mr. Melas' presentation focused on three major areas: Electronic Engineering Data (EED), Automated Machine Guidance (AMG), and automated stakeout and inspection.
