ASCE Met Section Scholarship Winners
2009 Scholarship Recipients with Met Section Scholarship Committee Chair Indhira Figuereo, Met Section Student Outreach Coordinator Gerarda Shields, and 2006 Scholarship Recipient Yurintzy Estrada
A total of $25,000 in scholarships was awarded to civil engineering students attending colleges and universities in New York City at the Met Section's annual Scholarship Luncheon. The event was held at the Grand Hyatt New York on April 22, 2009 and included a cocktail reception in which attendees got a chance to meet the scholarship winners in person and see how their contributions will be used to help educate the next generation of leaders in the civil engineering profession.

Dutch Civil Engineering Students Visit New York City Print E-mail
Dutch civil engineering students With March being "Spring Break" month for college students, the ASCE Met Section Hospitality Committee again received the visit of a contingent of civil engineering students from Avans University in the Netherlands, led by Prof. J.A. G. Sloots.

Overall Grade of "D" Assigned to America's Infrastructure Print E-mail
New York City Highway Interchange On March 25th, ASCE released the complete contents of its 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, which assigned an overall grade of D to the nation's infrastructure and indicated that $2.2 trillion in repairs and upgrades would be needed over the next five years to meet adequate conditions. The initial findings of the Report Card were originally released on January 28th, almost two months ahead of schedule while Congress and President Obama were quickly working on a stimulus package.

ASCE Celebrates Engineers Week at the New York Hall of Science Print E-mail
National Engineers Week On February 16, 2009, the Met Section celebrated Engineers Week at the New York Hall of Science in Queens with a variety of interactive activities designed to introduce children to some of the exciting challenges of engineering. The activities were staged in the rotunda of the Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, encircling a unique piece of artwork embedded into a railing that includes 72 scenes of New York City located around a 10-kilometer radius of the museum.
