When an interstate bridge collapses during rush hour or broken levees destroy a major city, Americans are again reminded of the vulnerability of the nation's infrastructure, but few people feel empowered to do anything about it. Beginning this fall, however, thousands of middle school students will tackle the issue of safety for the country’s vast network of utilities, transportation, structures, and communications systems in the 2008 National Engineers Week Future City Competition™.

The research essay topic of the 2010 Future City Competition took on a special meaning following the recent earthquake in Haiti and the large number of people in the United States that have been losing homes due to foreclosures. Since September, middle school students have been using their creativity to solve these current problems facing society by writing a paper on "providing an affordable green living space for people who have lost their home due to a disaster or financial emergency" and making a model of a future city.
The ASCE Metropolitan Section and Polytechnic Institute of NYU hosted the New York City Regional Future City Competition on January 24, 2009. Volunteers from both the Met Section and Polytechnic Institute of NYU helped to make this another successful year for the competition. Forty-three teams consisting of middle school students throughout the metropolitan region arrived at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU with the excitement of presenting the products created by five long months of their efforts.
The Met Section and Polytechnic University hosted the New York City Regional Future City Competition on January 19, 2008. Help from volunteers from ASCE Metropolitan Section and Polytechnic University made this another successful year for the competition. Thirty one teams consisting of middle school students throughout the metropolitan region arrived at the Polytechnic University with excitement of presenting the product created by their five long months of effort.
