Structural Design of the Water Cube of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Print E-mail

Water Cube If you watched Michael Phelps rewrite history during the 2008 Summer Olympics, you definitely couldn't miss the impressive design of the Water Cube, the venue for the swimming and diving events where Phelps won an unprecedented eight gold medals. Inspired by Kelvin's "Foam Theory," the National Aquatics Center—commonly known as the Water Cube—was another star of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Designed to resemble soap bubbles, the rectangular shape of the Water Cube was intended to coordinate with the circular design and philosophy of the neighboring National Stadium (Bird's Nest).

Herrmann Provides Testimony to House Committee in Support of Infrastructure Funding Print E-mail

United States CapitolAndrew Herrmann, P.E., F.ASCE returned to Washington D.C. on October 29, 2008 to provide testimony on behalf of ASCE to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure regarding the need for infrastructure funding that would be included in a new economic recovery and job creation package. A full copy of his written testimony is provided on the ASCE website. Last month, Herrmann also provided testimony on behalf of ASCE to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on bridge inspection and safety.

Younger Members and Students Create Artwork at PS 85 Print E-mail

New York Cares Day Younger members and students from the ASCE Met Section joined over 8,000 volunteers by participating in New York Cares Day on October 18, 2008. This is an annual event organized by New York Cares that helps to revitalize New York City's public schools. ASCE's team of volunteers worked at P.S. 85 - Great Expectations School in the Bronx this year by painting murals in stairwells and on outside doors, painting line games such as hopscotch on the playground, repainting the school sign, and painting posters for the gym. The YMF extends a special thank you to everyone that came to help out! See the Met Section photo gallery for more pictures from this event.
 
Volunteers Are Needed for NYC Regional Future City Competition Print E-mail

Future City Competition As a volunteer for the New York City Regional Future City Competition, you can help give students an understanding of the role that engineers play in designing cities and expose them to the possibility of pursuing a career in engineering themselves. The National Future City Competition allows seventh and eighth grade students to design a city using the SimCity software program, write an essay and abstract about their city, and build a scale model.

Russian and Swiss Engineering Groups Visit New York City Print E-mail

Brooklyn Bridge Site Tour The Hospitality Committee had the opportunity of organizing site tours and technical presentations for two contingents of engineers. These visits were customized to address the groups' specific interests and requests. On September 22, 2008, a group of nine engineers from Russia that had been attending the IABSE Conference in Chicago went on a site tour of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges followed by a technical presentation in the Parsons Brinckerhoff offices. The Brooklyn Bridge site tour was led by Russell Holcomb, Tim Whitehouse and Lev Gold of NYCDOT. The Manhattan Bridge site tour was led by Brian Gill of NYCDOT and Jim Tarpey of GPI. Roger Haight led the presentations at the Parsons Brinckerhoff offices. The visitors engaged in a very meaningful exchange of ideas and were particularly interested in all aspects of bridge maintenance.

Landmark Status for East River Bridges on Their Centennials? Print E-mail

Manhattan Bridge The Queensboro Bridge and Manhattan Bridge will each celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2009. The Met Section is planning to submit a nomination for each of these East River bridges to ASCE's History & Heritage Committee for National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (NHCEL) status. Any published papers, articles, or reports about either bridge or biographical information on their principal designers would be helpful in supporting the nomination and could be included as attachments.
