On July 16, 2009, the Met Section welcomed ASCE's Construction Institute (CI) for the inaugural presentation of the OSHA-sponsored Crane Safety Training for Engineers and Supervisors. Matt Burkart, P.E., a construction safety expert with over 40 years in the construction industry and active committee leader with ASCE/CI and ASCE, presented the three-hour crane safety training to 75 attendees at the Ketch Restaurant in Lower Manhattan.

International Group
|
The International Group has published the second edition (2009) of its Guide to Civil Engineering Projects In and Around New York City, a pocket-size booklet that describes the many of the city's engineering wonders including its skyscrapers, bridges, tunnels, highways, subways, water supply and wastewater systems, and transportation terminals.

Met Section
|
The ASCE Met Section held its annual dinner dance and awards presentation at Tavern on the Green in New York City on June 19th, 2008. The event included a cocktail hour, awards ceremony, recognition of officers, directors, technical group and committee chairs from the past year, and installation of the 2009-10 officers and directors. The evening concluded with music and dancing.

History & Heritage Committee
|
The Metropolitan Section has been selected as a 2009 recipient of a History and Heritage Citation. The citation is given by ASCE's History and Heritage Committee and recognizes the role Sections and Branches play in promoting civil engineering history to the public and preserving the history of the field. The Met Section was recognized for its outreach activities over the course of the year, especially during the 125th anniversary celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Met Section
|
The Metropolitan Section has endorsed Moustafa Gouda as the official nominee to serve as President-Elect for the term commencing in October 2009. The nomination was approved by the Met Section’s Board of Directors at the Board meeting held on April 15, 2009. A copy of the endorsement letter is available on the Met Section website. You can find out more about the upcoming election by visiting the 2010 election page on the ASCE website.

Met Section
|
The first issue of the Metropolitan Section newsletter was published in October 1953, in which John P. Riley called the new publication in his President's Message "a milestone in the continuing progress of the Section." Up until a few years ago, monthly mailings of the Met Section newsletter continued to serve as the primary means in which ASCE members where informed about upcoming events in the New York City metropolitan area and other Section news and activities.
