Windy Conditions Make for Challenging LIB Golf Outing Print E-mail

ASCE Long Island Branch Golf Outing On September 30, 2009, the ASCE Long Island Branch held its seventh annual golf outing at the Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, NY. After starting off the day with a barbecue luncheon, sixteen foursomes from different companies competed in a best ball tournament. Windy weather made the course particularly challenging given its location adjacent to Great South Bay. The golf outing was followed by a dinner to recognize the tournament champions and the following award winners:

The ASCE Long Island Branch kicked off the 2009-2010 year of events with its annual technical presentations with the ITE Met Section at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, NY on September 17, 2009. Mr. Robert M. Eschbacher, P.E. and Mr. Robert Brown, AICP of VHB Engineering, Surveying and Landscape Architecture, P.C. began the afternoon session with a presentation on the "Traffic Impact Study for the Long Island Lighthouse Project".

Herrmann to Receive ASCE President's Medal Print E-mail

Andrew W. Herrmann, F.ASCE has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the ASCE President's Medal for his role in producing the 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure. This prestigious award is presented by ASCE to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of eminent engineers to the profession, the Society, or the public. Herrmann, a senior partner at Hardesty & Hanover, LLP in New York City and a registered Professional Engineer in 26 states, served as the chairman of ASCE's 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure Advisory Council. He is also a member of the ASCE National Board of Direction.

A past president of the ASCE Met Section, Herrmann has been responsible for many of Hardesty & Hanover's fixed and movable bridge projects in his 35-year career. Herrmann has served on the Advisory Council for ASCE's 2001, 2003, and 2005 Report Cards for America's Infrastructure and was co-chair of the 2005 SEI Structures Congress in New York City. Last fall, he gave testimony in Washington D.C. before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works regarding bridge inspection and safety and before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure regarding the need for infrastructure funding in the economic stimulus package.

Members Provide Feedback on Met Section Activities Print E-mail
Met Section
Membership Survey In August 2009, the Membership Committee conducted a survey to obtain feedback from members and help officers plan events for the upcoming year. Surveys were distributed to a randomly selected group of Met Section members. Some of the key findings were that the benefits members value most were: obtaining PDH credits, networking with other civil engineers, exchanging technical ideas, and advancing their careers through continuing education and professional recognition.

Met Section Hosts OSHA Sponsored Crane Safety Training Print E-mail

Crane Safety Training for Engineers and Supervisors On July 16, 2009, the Met Section welcomed ASCE's Construction Institute (CI) for the inaugural presentation of the OSHA-sponsored Crane Safety Training for Engineers and Supervisors. Matt Burkart, P.E., a construction safety expert with over 40 years in the construction industry and active committee leader with ASCE/CI and ASCE, presented the three-hour crane safety training to 75 attendees at the Ketch Restaurant in Lower Manhattan.

Updated Guide to NYC Civil Engineering Projects Published Print E-mail

Sightseeing at the Brooklyn BridgeThe International Group has published the second edition (2009) of its Guide to Civil Engineering Projects In and Around New York City, a pocket-size booklet that describes the many of the city's engineering wonders including its skyscrapers, bridges, tunnels, highways, subways, water supply and wastewater systems, and transportation terminals. The guide is designed to provide the public and visitors with an overview of some of the major civil engineering landmarks in the NYC Metropolitan area. The guide has interesting historical information and useful for educational purposes and a location guide.
