In some cases the failures are dramatic and may even result in loss of life, but in many cases are not particularly newsworthy. Regardless of the type of failure, they almost all result in expensive litigation, and they all provide information that can be used to improve our professional practice.

On May 6, 2010, Long Island Branch held its Annual Awards Dinner Dance at the Westbury Manor. The event allows ASCE to recognize 2009-2010 projects, fellow engineers and extend thanks to members and their companies that help to support the Long Island Branch throughout the year. It is also a great way to allow everyone a chance to network with other engineers and cut a rug if the dance bug bites.

Outstanding local college students and the Met Section's new life members were recognized by the Younger Member Forum at its annual Ridgway Awards Dinner and Life Member Installation, which was held on April 29, 2010 at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn. This year's event also included the presentation of the annual Met Section Scholarships to student members.

Professor Harry G. Poulos delivered the Eighth Annual William Barclay Parsons Lecture at the CUNY Graduate Center on April 19, 2010. The topic of his lecture was "The Influence of Tunneling – Induced Ground Movements on Nearby Foundations." Prof. Poulos is currently a Senior Principal with Coffey Geotechnics in Sydney, Australia and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney.
