In October 2008, the Met Section submitted nominations for the Manhattan Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, and Williamsburg Bridge to ASCE's History and Heritage Committee (HHC) for National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (NHCEL) status. The nomination packages included published papers, articles, and reports about the bridges and their designers. The HHC has voted to recommend each of the bridges for designation as a NHCEL. The nominations, along with the committee's recommendations will be forwarded to the Board of Direction for consideration at its meeting in April 2009. The Queensboro Bridge and Manhattan Bridge will each celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2009.

On December 5, 2008, ASCE members helped to brighten the faces of more than 50 children at the Community Lunch Holiday Party at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Morningside Heights. Community Lunch is a soup kitchen run by the students of Columbia University serving disadvantaged people living in the area. Volunteers helped to decorate the room with balloons, streamers, lights, and snowflakes and prepared activity tables for children to decorate cupcakes and create arts and crafts such as snowmen, the Star of David, Three Kings crowns, and jewelry. Dinner was also provided for the kids and their parents. See the Met Section photo gallery for more pictures from this event.

Inspired by Kelvin's "Foam Theory," the National Aquatics Center—commonly known as the Water Cube—was another star of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Designed to resemble soap bubbles, the rectangular shape of the Water Cube was intended to coordinate with the circular design and philosophy of the neighboring National Stadium (Bird's Nest).
