Met Section

 The ASCE Region 10 Board of Governors recently launched a "SisterSection Program" to establish a real-time relationship and a one-on-oneexchange mechanism between the international Sections of Region 10 and the Society's domestic Sections in Regions 1 through 9. The goal of this interface is to establish various linkages so that more international ASCE members will be drawn into the mainstream Society. |

Younger Member Forum
|
The Met Section recognized some of its newest and lifetime members at the Ridgway Awards and Life Member Installation Dinner, held on April 29, 2009 at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. The annual event, named after the first president of the Metropolitan Section and organized by the Younger Member Forum, included the presentation of certificates to newly inducted life members and awards to outstanding members from all seven ASCE student chapters located in the Met Section.

 Back in January 2009, the Met Section hosted its first joint event with the New York Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-NY), becoming one of the first local sections to hold a joint event with ASCE's newest partnership organization. The joint event discussed some of ASCE's behind-the-scenes work on Capitol Hill to help shape the infrastructure portion of the economic stimulus package and also helped to raise $1,000 for EWB-NY's initiative to design and construct a new potable water system for the village of Matunda in Kenya.

2009 Scholarship Recipients with Met Section Scholarship Committee Chair Indhira Figuereo, Met Section Student Outreach Coordinator Gerarda Shields, and 2006 Scholarship Recipient Yurintzy Estrada
A total of $25,000 in scholarships was awarded to civil engineering students attending colleges and universities in New York City at the Met Section's annual Scholarship Luncheon. The event was held at the Grand Hyatt New York on April 22, 2009 and included a cocktail reception in which attendees got a chance to meet the scholarship winners in person and see how their contributions will be used to help educate the next generation of leaders in the civil engineering profession.

The 7th Annual William Barclay Parsons Lecture in Underground Engineering was held at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan on April 21, 2009. Dr. Gregg E. Korbin, a consultant that has worked on over 100 projects and published over 30 papers and technical reports, delivered a lecture titled "Lessons Learned – 35 Years in Underground Design and Construction".

Infrastructure Group
|
An international array of engineers and scientists gathered at the 2009 Infrastructure Group Seminar, "Against the Deluge: Storm Surge Barriers to Protect New York City," held at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University on March 30-31. The objective of the seminar was to begin to develop the scientific and engineering information base needed to evaluate storm surge barrier concepts and perhaps point the way to their further development.
