Casting Call for Engineering Students and Recent Graduates Print E-mail

ClapperboardIf you're a young engineer and interested in being on a national television show, a new series being produced for MTV called "Hack'd" has posted a casting call for engineering students and recent graduates across the country. The show will feature young engineers, 19-25 years old, which can showcase their engineering knowledge, creativity, and sense of humor, competing in teams to out-hack each other with creative feats of engineering. Applicants must submit a short resume, bio, and video clips online by Friday, February 6th.

Prof. James K. Mitchell, Dist. M.ASCE presented the "Seismic Ground Improvement of Earth Dams" for the 18th Annual Mueser Rutledge Technical Lecture on December 11, 2008.

Met Section Members Volunteer at Soup Kitchen Holiday Party Print E-mail

Community Lunch Holiday Party On December 5, 2008, ASCE members helped to brighten the faces of more than 50 children at the Community Lunch Holiday Party at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Morningside Heights. Community Lunch is a soup kitchen run by the students of Columbia University serving disadvantaged people living in the area. Volunteers helped to decorate the room with balloons, streamers, lights, and snowflakes and prepared activity tables for children to decorate cupcakes and create arts and crafts such as snowmen, the Star of David, Three Kings crowns, and jewelry. Dinner was also provided for the kids and their parents. See the Met Section photo gallery for more pictures from this event.
 
Excavation & Underpinning Practices - Special Enforcement Program Print E-mail

Tim Lynch, P.E., Chief Engineer of the New York City Department of Buildings Excavation and Major Renovations Unit, delivered a lecture to the Met Section's Geotechnical Group on October 23, 2008. As part of the community outreach portion of his position at the Department of Buildings, Mr. Lynch helps to educate the design and construction community about the dangers involved with performing excavation with insufficient research, engineering, and excavation support.

Structural Design of the Water Cube of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Print E-mail

Beijing Water Cube If you watched Michael Phelps rewrite history during the 2008 Summer Olympics, you definitely couldn't miss the impressive design of the Water Cube, the venue for the swimming and diving events where Phelps won an unprecedented eight gold medals. Inspired by Kelvin's "Foam Theory," the National Aquatics Center—commonly known as the Water Cube—was another star of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Designed to resemble soap bubbles, the rectangular shape of the Water Cube was intended to coordinate with the circular design and philosophy of the neighboring National Stadium (Bird's Nest).
