| Founded in 1754, Columbia University is the oldest institution of higher education in New York State. Columbia's ASCE student chapter began in 1927. |
ASCE student chapters help college students prepare themselves for entry into the civil engineering profession and the Society. Through involvement in ASCE chapters at colleges and universities, students plan and organize chapter activities, invite guest speakers to events, arrange field trips to local civil engineering projects, attend ASCE conferences, and compete against other student chapters in regional and national concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions. Participation in an ASCE student chapter helps civil engineering students develop leadership and communication skills and to begin making professional contacts.
The formation of student chapters was first authorized by ASCE's Board of Direction in 1920. The Metropolitan Section includes eight ASCE student chapters, each of which is assigned a Faculty Advisor and Practitioner Advisor(s). The Younger Member Forum organizes visits to the student chapters during the academic year and recogizes outstanding student members at its annual Ridgway Awards event. The Met Section also offers scholarships to active members of ASCE student chapters.
