One of the most enjoyable aspects of being President of the Metropolitan Section is having the opportunity to meet with some very interesting people. Yesterday I met with a delegation of Mayors that were visiting from China. The Mayors were visiting various cities in the United States and meeting with local officials, agency heads, companies and ASCE Sections to learn more about our infrastructure, urban planning and financing of infrastructure upgrades. The Met Section was able to assist with setting up talks and site tours for the delegation. Special thanks go to Mr. Beile Yin of Hardesty & Hanover for setting up the visit and coordinating it with the Section. It was my pleasure to be able to participate in what may be the first of many such exchanges.

I am sure that many of you have received the notices from ASCE National regarding membership renewal. I encourage everyone to renew their membership and hope that some of you can encourage others to join ASCE. Please remember to fill out the Section Membership dues portion of the application. This will provide critical funding to enable us to offer talks, lectures and other events locally. Section dues provide the funding to enable us to send out the newsletter. In fact, the newsletter is traditionally only sent to members that have paid their Section dues. This year we have sent the newsletter to all ASCE members that have their primary address in the Section. As of February 1st, 2004 the newsletter will only be sent to members that have paid their Section Dues. Please help support our local programs by paying your section dues.

The Future Cities Competition is currently looking for Mentors and Judges for this year's competition. Please contact Cengiz Mumcuoglu if you are interested in volunteering. In past years I have volunteered to work with the students as both a mentor and judge and found the experience to be extremely rewarding and fun. This is a great way to share some of your knowledge with the next generation of engineers.

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Prasad Kudlapur, P.E., PhD has accepted a nomination to become a Director of the Section. He will be taking the seat of Richard Cassin who has become President of the Lower Hudson Valley Branch. Congratulations Prasad!

On behalf of the entire Met Section Board of Directors have a Healthy and Happy Holiday Season!
