William A. Welch Award Print E-mail
This award is presented to an individual who has shown outstanding performance in the field of civil engineering in government. The award is named after Major William Addams Welch (1868-1941), who served as the chief engineer and general manager of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission for 26 years. Welch was known as the father of the state park movement and helped to expand Bear Mountain State Park and Harriman State Park, constructing lakes, campgrounds, and scenic mountain roads (including Storm King Highway and Seven Lakes Drive). Welch also created Nyack Beach State Park and Tallman Mountain State Park in New York, helped to lay out the boundaries of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina, and encouraged government officials to create state park systems in Kentucky and Virginia.
