ASCE members are encouraged to nominate colleagues for national and local awards. Nomination forms for national awards are provided on the ASCE website and nominations for local awards can be made to Met Section officers (see below). ASCE also offers scholarships and fellowships to engineering students who are ASCE members. Applications are accepted in the spring for the following semester. Each year, the Met Section presents scholarships to active members of student chapters in the Met Section and to children of Met Section members.

Society Honors and Awards

American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE presents Distinguished Achievement Awards to recognize exceptionally meritorious achievement by its members. Each year, ASCE presents over 80 technical awards for achievement or papers. Many Met Section members have been recipients of national awards from the Society. The highest award of the Society is Distinguished Membership (formerly Honorary Membership). The Distinguished Membership grade is reserved for members of the Society who have attained the grade of Member or Fellow and who demonstrate acknowledged eminence in some branch of engineering or in its related arts and sciences.

Additionally, ASCE presents Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) awards to recognize lifetime contributions to the civil engineering profession and projects that best illustrate superior civil engineering skills and represent a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society. Several members and projects from the Met Section have received Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) awards from the Society.

Met Section Awards

Each year, the Met Section presents its own awards to recognize local members for their contributions to the field of civil engineering. These awards are presented at the Annual Dinner Dance & Award Presentation held each June:

Met Section Dinner Dance & Awards Presentation
The Met Section's 43rd Annual Dinner Dance & Awards Presentation was held on June 13, 2008 at Tavern on the Green in New York City.

Any ASCE member, regardless of grade, may make nominations, and individuals may be nominated for more than one award. The award recipient must agree to accept the award in person at the Annual Dinner Dance & Awards Presentation in June. An individual's resume (or supporting descriptive literature for a project), a rationale, and one page biography of 200 words or less are required to be submitted to support each nomination. Submissions should be made to the Chair of the Structures Group (for the Roebling Award and Homer Gage Balcom Award), the Chair of the Construction Group (for the Construction Achievement Award and Design/Build Award), or to the Chair of the Awards Committee (for all other awards).

See the pdf Awards Nomination Form for more information. The deadline for all 2012 nominations is on Friday, March 2, 2012.

The Long Island Branch, Lower Hudson Valley Branch, and Younger Member Forum each present their own annual awards.
