Congratulations to Professor Andrew Smyth of Columbia University, a recipient of one of the prestigious 2008 Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prizes. ASCE presents this award to recognize notable achievements in research related to civil engineering. Preference is given to younger members of early accomplishment who can be expected to continue fruitful careers in research.

Professor Smyth's award citation reads: "For fundamental contributions in the highly efficient identification and modeling of nonlinear deteriorating structural dynamics." The selection committee commented that his research is characterized by "thoroughness, novelty, relevance, and intelligent breakthroughs."

Dr. Smyth is an Associate Professor at Columbia University in the Department of Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics. His research areas of interest include structural dynamics, structural health monitoring and control, nonlinear system identification, and random vibrations. He has numerous publications, honors and awards. He contributes greatly to ASCE and other societies through his leadership in committees and conferences, and as an editor and reviewer for technical journals. You can learn more about Professor Smyth by visiting his home page on the Columbia University website.

Dr. Smyth joins Raymond D. Mindlin (1958), Melvin L. Baron (1966) and Masanobu Shinozuka (1972), as Met Section members that have recieved Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prizes, and the long list of Met Section members that have received honors and awards from the Society.
