On June 12, 2008, the Younger Member Forum organized a construction site tour of the new Terminal 5 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens. The construction of the $800 million airside and landside improvements for Terminal 5 is the largest infrastructure investment undertaken by JetBlue Airways since the New York City-based airline began flying in February 2000 and has been featured on the Extreme Engineering television series on the Discovery Channel. The unique design of Terminal 5 will utilize the front portion of the historic Eero Saarinen terminal as an entry point.
The new JetBlue terminal is one of the first in the United States to be designed with increased aviation security requirements in mind, allowing for more security lanes to reduce passenger wait times and the provision of shops and restaurants beyond the security checkpoint. JetBlue is one of the largest airlines at Kennedy Airport and accounted 28 percent of the airport's total passengers in 2007. The new terminal is scheduled to open in September 2008 and will double JetBlue's capacity at its primary hub airport. See the Met Section photo gallery for more pictures from the JetBlue Terminal Construction Site Tour. |
