The Ridgway Awards is an annual event sponsored by the Younger Member Forum that recognizes award recipients from ASCE student chapters and honors the Met Section's newly inducted life members. This is a unique occasion that brings together the students that will soon graduate and begin their professional careers with life members that have each have several decades worth of experience in the civil engineering profession (to obtain Life Member status, members must be at least 65 years old and have paid ASCE membership dues for at least 30 years). The Ridgway Award is presented in recognition of a student's dedication to their civil engineering studies and for outstanding academic performance.
Robert Ridgway was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 19, 1862. Although he never received any formal engineering training, throughout his 49 years of public service to New York City, Robert Ridgway was involved in the construction of several of its major infrastructure projects including the New Croton Aqueduct, the first New York City subway, the first subway tunnel under the East River, the Catskill Aqueduct, the expansion of the IRT and BMT subway systems under the Dual Contracts, and the construction of the IND subway system. He was promoted to Chief Engineer of the Transit Commission in 1921. Robert Ridgway was the first president of the ASCE Met Section and served as the president of the national Society in 1925.
