Future City Competition As a volunteer for the New York City Regional Future City Competition, you can help give students an understanding of the role that engineers play in designing cities and expose them to the possibility of pursuing a career in engineering themselves. The National Future City Competition allows seventh and eighth grade students to design a city using the SimCity software program, write an essay and abstract about their city, and build a scale model.

Here are five ways in which you can help support this program:

  1. Please consider being a mentor… Mentors are a key part of the experience for the students; unfortunately despite the announcements and requests, every year two or three schools never get matched with a mentor. We would like to change that this year and have every school matched with their own mentor. We need the engineering community to volunteer to help achieve this goal. Please seriously consider taking this opportunity to help out. Some common questions about mentoring are answered on our website. Contact Karen Armfield at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for a list of schools waiting to be matched with a mentor. See the current list of schools below.
  2. Volunteer on the planning committee… If you are interested in volunteering to help with the planning of this event please contact Karen Armfield at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Typically, the volunteers spend about 34 hours per month from September until the competition day, 10 hours on competition day (January 24, 2009), and 12 hours per month for the rest of the year.
  3. Volunteer to help out as a judge or a competition day volunteer… Every year we need volunteers as judges and competition day volunteers. If you would like to volunteer please email Karen Armfield at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
    • Computer Map Judges – use SimCity software to score student’s submissions, November 20th to December 20th, can be done from home, estimated time 8 hours.
    • Essay and Abstract Judges – read student’s work and score submissions, December 15th to January 1st, can be done from home, estimated time 6 hours.
    • Competition Day Judges – evaluate student’s models and presentations, January 24, 2009, 7:30 am to 4 pm.
    • Competition Day Volunteers – scorekeepers, timekeepers, registration table, organizers, etc., January 24, 2009.
  4. Have your company sponsor… We couldn’t have over 200 students participate every year without the support of engineering firms in the local community. Each sponsoring firm will have a special award in their firm’s name and space in the competition program. Download our sponsorship packet from our website and have your company show their support.
  5. Know any seventh or eighth grade students? Do they want to learn about engineering? Help them form a team with two friends and a teacher and register them for the competition. They can find out about having their school participate at www.futurecity.org. This is a great way to introduce a young student to engineering.
