 The Met Section Structures Group was formed in 1965-66. Dr. Thomas C. Kavanagh served as the group's first chairperson and also led the organizational committee that resulted in the formation of the Structures Group. In its first year, the Structures Group sponsored two joint events with the New York Chapters of AIA and CSI, a one day seminar precast and prestressed concrete and a four-day seminar on modern uses of masonry, both of which drew 250-300 attendees. Other technical lectures organized by the Structures Group in its inaugural year included "Recent Progress in Steel & Concrete Design & Construction in Italy" and "Planning and Design of Parking Garages in the Metropolitan Area."
In 1968-1969, the Structures Group provided considerable assistance in developing the New York City Building Code. The group's annual seminars began in 1969 with a series of four lectures on steel column design by Dr. Bruce Johnston of the University of Arizona. In 1984 the Met Section established the Roebling Award for eminence in the design and rehabilitation of bridges throughout the world. The Structures Group later established the Homer Gage Balcom Award in 1996 to honor an individual for a lifetime of achievement in the structural engineering of buildings or special structures.
