On January 20, 1964, sixteen members met in the United Engineering Center under the chairmanship of H. C. Lamberton, Jr. to form the Aero-Space Transport Group with a purpose to work within the framework of the Metropolitan Section towards advancement of aerospace transportation and the interchange of knowledge related thereto. The Met Section Board of Directors approved the formation of the Aero-Space Transport Group, which held its first annual meeting on April 8, 1964. The group's first program meeting was held on May 13, 1964 with a technical lecture on "The Apollo Project – Launch to Recovery" by Peter Kelly, Head of the Lunar Excursion Module Control Dynamics Group at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp.
