On February 16, 2009, the Met Section celebrated Engineers Week at the New York Hall of Science in Queens with a variety of interactive activities designed to introduce children to some of the exciting challenges of engineering. The activities were staged in the rotunda of the Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, encircling a unique piece of artwork embedded into a railing that includes 72 scenes of New York City located around a 10-kilometer radius of the museum.
The President's Day holiday brought hundreds of children and their parents to the science center, most of which stopped by ASCE's activity tables and worked to solve engineering problems through fun hands-on activities. Kids built soaring towers made out of index cards and paperclips, created domes out of gumdrops and toothpicks, and experimented with bridge design by folding a single sheet of paper and seeing how many pennies they could support before falling down. Kids weren't the only ones that tried out the hands-on activities—many of their parents couldn't resist from participating and seeing if they could match the creativity of their sons and daughters.
