On February 18, 2009, Graham C.G. Smith of Structural Preservation Systems, LLC gave a lecture titled "Urban Geotechnical Challenges: Construction Near Existing Structures" to the Geotechnical Group at the CUNY Graduate Center Recital Hall in Manhattan. The presentation focused on ground improvement methods to increase the engineering properties of soil, prior to excavations adjacent to existing structures. Permeation grouting of sand was covered in detail, with several recent case histories. Other common ground improvement methods, such as mircopiles, soldier piles, and ground anchors were also covered. In each case, Mr. Smith provided information on methods, techniques, and equipments, along with relevant case histories. |
