The ASCE Long Island Branch kicked off the 2009-2010 year of events with its annual technical presentations with the ITE Met Section at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, NY on September 17, 2009. Mr. Robert M. Eschbacher, P.E. and Mr. Robert Brown, AICP of VHB Engineering, Surveying and Landscape Architecture, P.C. began the afternoon session with a presentation on the "Traffic Impact Study for the Long Island Lighthouse Project".

A $3.7 billion project, the Long Island Lighthouse involves transformation of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale—the home of the NHL's New York Islanders—and the surrounding area. The presentation discussed the existing traffic and the potential traffic impacts of the project which includes the revitalization of the Coliseum, construction of residential neighborhoods, lifestyle retail, entertainment venues, office space, a multi-purpose athletic complex, state-of-art conference and exhibition facilities, a minor league ballpark, and a five star hotel. The traffic study associated with the project was discussed in detail, including the assumptions and software used for the analysis. Mr. Eschbacher concluded the presentation by discussing next steps for the project. All attendees who participated in the afternoon session received 1.5 PDHs in continuing education credit.

The event continued with a dinner and evening program on the "Vision Plan for a Green Route 347". Ms. Phyllis Elgut, Mr. Robb Smith and Ms. Margaret Conklin, from Region 10 of the New York State Department of Transportation, presented the program to 141 attendees. The vision plan is a program that will help improve the safety and mobility of drivers, pedestrians, and bike riders along the Route 347 corridor in Suffolk County while protecting and enhancing the environment. This program will also utilize the principals of smart growth and land use planning. Ms. Elgut ended the program by asking the attendees to answer a few questions about what was discussed in the evening, who received one PDH in continuing education credits.

Both technical lectures were very well received and many thanks go to our speakers for making this event a success.
