Outstanding local college students and the Met Section's new life members were recognized by the Younger Member Forum at its annual Ridgway Awards Dinner and Life Member Installation, which was held on April 29, 2010 at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn. This year's event also included the presentation of the annual Met Section Scholarships to student members.

After a reception with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, Gerarda Shields, the Student Outreach Coordinator of the Younger Member Forum, welcomed the attendees and Met Section President Craig Ruyle and Life Member Committee Chair Nausherwan Hasan presented the newly installed life members with pins and plaques. Newly inducted life members Harshad Lakhani and Melvyn Wasserman spoke to the students about their respective careers and offered advice to the students that will soon enter the civil engineering profession.

Lawrence Chriarelli, the Interim Civil Engineering Department Head of Polytechnic Institute of NYU spoke to students following a buffet dinner and mentioned how he was a past recipient of the Ridgway Award from the Met Section's Associate Member Forum. For each college and university, the Ridgway Award was presented to the student with the most outstanding academic performance and the Younger Member Forum Award was given to the student with the most commitment and service to their ASCE student chapter; these awards were presented to the students by the faculty advisors from each of the student chapters.

The event concluded with the presentation of the Met Section Scholarship Awards. Scholarship Committee Chair Indhira Figuereo mentioned that this year a record number of applications had been received from students at area colleges. The scholarship recipients were then presented with certificates and checks. This year, the Met Section gave out a total of $30,000 in scholarship awards to students.
