This award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the civil engineering profession by a younger member.
2011 Recipient:
Peter S. Mancuso, P.E.Transportation Engineer Parsons Brinckerhoff Peter S. Mancuso is a transportation engineer for Parsons Brinckerhoff in New York City. He has seven years of experience in the transportation engineering field and most recently has worked on projects such as Park Avenue Signals design, Staten Island Expressway (I-278) Access Improvements, the Sunrise Highway (Route 27) Sustainable Transportation study in Long Island, and the LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal Building Modernization project. His expertise lies in traffic engineering; specifically signal and intersection design, transportation impact studies, and 3D traffic simulation models. Recently, Peter was asked to help represent his company's young engineers at an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Lobby Day in Albany. Around the office, Peter is well known as the Blood Drive coordinator and JP Morgan Corporate Challenge leader. He has also participated as a Book Buddy for Learning Leaders, a program that promotes literacy by matching students with pen pals from local companies. Peter currently serves as President of the ASCE Younger Member Forum (YMF) of the Met Section. In past years, he has held the position of Secretary, Social Chair, and Vice President. He is most proud of his work with the last two year’s executive forums as well as this year’s successful student outreach efforts by the entire YMF executive board. Peter routinely participates in YMF charity activities, such as New York Cares Day, National Engineers Week Kid's Day at the New York Hall of Science, and the God's Love We Deliver Race to Deliver. In addition to the YMF, Peter serves as a judge and mentor for the Future City Competition, a program developed for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering. Peter received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and Master of Science degree in Transportation Planning and Engineering from Polytechnic University (now Polytechnic Institute of NYU). During his years as an undergraduate student, Peter was very active in the ASCE student chapter. There, he held the positions of Treasurer and Vice President. Besides participating in numerous ASCE functions and charitable events, he was also a primary member of the Concrete Canoe Team for all four years. In his final year of participation, the team won the Metropolitan Section Regional competition and competed at the ASCE National Conference in Washington DC. Prior to graduating, Peter was inducted into Tau Beta Pi and entered the Order of the Engineer. He has worn his Engineer's ring ever since. Peter was born and raised in Brooklyn, where he currently [proudly] resides. In his free time, he aspires to be active and travel the world. An avid snowboarder, runner, and gardener, Peter finds joy in getting outdoors and being surrounded by nature. Peter is a strong believer of work-life balance, and values time with family and friends. Upcoming adventures include vacationing in England and a trip to Iceland to take part in his first marathon.
