Partially intended to be a vehicle for inter-chapter relations, the "ASCE Day at the Beach" event originated from discussions between younger member group leaders at the annual ERYMC conference in Atlanta, Georgia this previous winter; the idea arose to organize more inter-chapter activities to broaden the network of young professionals in the civil engineering profession and strengthen the bonds between different younger member groups.

Consisting of members from multiple Sections and Branches, the diversity of the group was clear straight from the beginning. Some members escaped the hot cities by train while others simply took a short drive or walk from nearby towns in the Garden State. On the sand, however, everyone was equally relaxed and cheerful. Participants tossed footballs, flew kites, and boogey boarded their way through the day. Friends and family were also welcomed and happily took part in the day's activities. Overall, the ASCE Day at the Beach event was a great success, and will pave the way for future collaborations between the Sections and Branches within the Northeast.
