Michael O'Rourke, a civil engineering professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and chair of the ASCE 7 Snow & Rain Load Committee is directing a study of roof failures in the Northeast this past winter. The overall objective is to determine if the failures were due to more snow than envisioned by building codes, or due to less structural capacity than envisioned by codes. The project grew out of the question "Do we need to change our codes based on the large number of building collapses this past winter?"

Professor O'Rourke is working with several Northeastern states and has prepared a survey to provide data for his study. We ask that you assist in the study by filling either a doc hard copy form or online form if you have had building failures last winter from snow loads. Please fax the form if you have provided a sketch of the building to (518) 486-4487.

New York's Department of State will accept the forms, collate data and provide these to Professor O'Rourke. Responses from code enforcement officials or other interested parties with knowledge of roof failures would be appreciated. Please submit the form by August 13, 2011.
