From September 22-23, 2011, the ASCE Met Section Hospitality Committee hosted a group of 11 structural engineers from Malmö, Sweden. The group was headed by Peter Bojrup and Erik Sjöberg of Structor Malmö AB, an engineering firm specialized in the planning and design of building and civil engineering projects, project and construction management, development, and operation and maintenance.
In this occasion, and based on the interests of the visiting group, the Met Section arranged for a visit to the offices of structural engineering firm Guy Nordenson and Associates, where Rebecca Laberenne and Brett Schneider had the opportunity of showing them some of the most interesting residential and institutional projects designed and constructed by the firm, including the New Museum in New York City and several others. The next day, the visitors took a tour of the Second Avenue Tunnel construction site at the location of the future 96th Street station, arranged by ASCE Met Section Past President Vince Tirolo, former Chief Engineer of Skanska USA Civil, who is now retired and currently a consultant to the firm. The work is being performed by a joint venture of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone Construction and J.F. Shea Construction. Skanska Project Manager Alaeden Jlelaty made a presentation of the project and led the tour. The visit concluded with a quick visit to Skanska USA Buildings main office in New York City, located in the Empire State Building. The visitors were very satisfied with the experience and impressed and by the hospitality and the time devoted to their group, being fully aware of the busy work life of all the hosts. They wrote: "We are very thankful for that….. if you ever come to Sweden let us know so we can provide you with the same type of experience…" I hope that some of us will have a chance to take them up on this invitation! Many thanks to all the Met Section members who participated in the event!
