Younger Members on Long Island Discuss Formation of YMG Print E-mail
On November 10, 2011, younger civil engineers from Nassau and Suffolk counties convened at the Davenport Press in Mineola to discuss the potential for establishing an ASCE Younger Member Group (YMG) on Long Island. The event kicked-off with a networking hour for participants to have a drink and chat with one another. It was followed by an open discussion lead by current executive board members of both the Long Island Branch and the Met Section Younger Member Forum. The evening concluded with an enjoyable three course dinner.

There was a turnout of nineteen participants at this event, including representatives of both the Long Island Branch and Met Section Younger Member Forum to give advice and support for this initiative. Overall the event was highly successful and enjoyable for all participants in attendance, resulting in at least twelve younger members from Long Island voicing interest in participating and supporting this initiative.

The intent of forming a Younger Member Group on Long Island would be to engage younger members (ASCE members under 36 years of age) to participate in ASCE with a focus on the interests and issues specific to them. The Long Island Branch, Met Section, and Society would be also benefit with the formation of a Long Island Younger Member Group. These benefits would include, but not limited to:

  • Helping transition Student Chapter members to Section/Branch members
  • Engaging student members through recent college graduates
  • Providing training opportunities for future Section/Branch leaders
  • Bringing together Younger Members for topics of mutual interest
  • Increasing membership and participation of younger members
  • Getting new members involved by providing programs specifically targeted towards the early stages of their careers
  • Providing a forum for Younger Members to discuss their views and ideas on Society and Section/Branch matters.

Currently, the Younger Members of Long Island are in the process of working towards the official establishment and recognition from ASCE. The initial step will be to form a Younger Members Committee. The Committee will research and perform all necessary steps to adequately prepare and plan for a sustainable and functioning Younger Members Group on Long Island.
