On April 17, 2012, Mr. Atila Zekioglu, Principal and the Americas Region Buildings Practice Leader in Arup and Dr. Huseyin Darama, Senior Structural Engineer in Arup, shared their first-hand experience in seismic isolation design in a presentation on "Seismic Isolation Examples from International Projects". Their presentation focused on two unique projects: Istanbul SG Airport Terminal Building in Turkey and Taipei Performing Arts Center in Taiwan.
Istanbul SG Airport Terminal Building is the largest seismically-isolated building in the world, designed and constructed at a record speed of 18 months. The 2 million square foot (186,000 square meter) structure has 300 triple friction pendulum isolators that are the products of state-of-the-art building technology. Extensive testing and advanced computer simulations have been done to design this building to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0. The project received many awards including Popular Science magazine's 2010 Best of What's New Awards - Engineering Category.
The design of Taipei Performing Arts Center is inspired by a traditional Chinese wood block puzzle. Arup supported OMA Architects sharing their seismic design expertise on this unique architecture. The 538,000 square foot (50,000 square meter) complex has three separate theaters that can plug into a compact central cube to provide one massive theater. This event was sponsored by Limak Holding which is lead of the BOT joint venture team in Istanbul Airport Terminal Project. |
