Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn was the subject of a technical lecture arranged by ASCE Met Section Infrastructure Group on May 23, 2012. The event was held in collaboration with NYU-Poly Department of Civil Engineering at their Dibner Building Auditorium.
The title of talk was: Nothing but Net: Structural Solutions for the Barclays Center. Jeffrey A. Callow, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, Senior Associate, Thornton Tomasetti, discussed challenging aspects of the structural design for this Brooklyn's new 750,000 square foot multipurpose event arena, future home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Topics included the tied arch roof system, support for the unique double skinned façade and the dramatic cantilevered entrance canopy. Jeff also discussed how the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) helped solve these challenges and provided substantial benefits in both coordination and delivery.
