| Since its founding in 1859, Cooper Union has offered full-tuition scholarships to each admitted student. The ASCE student chapter at Cooper began in 1925. |
Student chapter advisors serve as a resource to ASCE student members, providing information and general guidance to student chapter members for organizing ASCE activities on campus, such as preparing, presenting, and discussing papers, holding offices, requesting and entertaining guest speakers, visiting engineering works under construction, preparing reports to the Society, attending ASCE conferences, and competing against other student chapters in regional and national concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions.
Each ASCE student chapter has one faculty advisor and up to two practitioner advisors. The faculty advisor is a member of the civil engineering faculty and the practitioner advisors are civil engineers—typically alumni of the college or university—that live or work in the New York City area and serve as a liaison between students and other civil engineering professionals.
