The goals for the Long Island Infrastructure Report Card are as follows:

• To identify the present condition of the following eight segments of Long Island infrastructure system:
  • Aviation
  • Bridges
  • Drinking Water
  • Freight Rail
  • Mass Transit
  • Roads
  • Solid Waste
  • Waste Water
• Based upon current funding levels and goals of responsible political bodies, identify the projected condition of these segments, and assign an appropriate letter grade to this condition.
• Plan and execute one or more promotional events that herald the public release of this document. This is further discussed below.

There are several critical groups that encompass this audience:

• Public entities, and their representatives, that are directly and indirectly responsible for providing the resources for maintaining and improving the condition of the infrastructure segments.
• The general public with the goal of educating them on the benefits associated with infrastructure maintenance, the consequences of not addressing its degradation, and mobilizing them to influence their elected representatives to respond to the findings of this report card.
• The media with the goal of communicating to the public and elected officials the findings of the report card in order to reinforce the message that action must be taken in order to maintain the nation's stature as a leader in commerce, technology and innovation.

The following methods will be used to promote this document:

• One or more press conferences with public officials who support the document, in particular Congressman Israel and his staff, local political leaders and public agency representatives, as appropriate.
• Issuing press releases and conducting interviews with local media.
• Mobilizing local ASCE members to speak on behalf of the report card, as appropriate.

The Long Island Infrastructure Report Card subcommittee has been active since September 2008 and is about three-quarters of the way complete in producing this document. To date the following has been accomplished:

• Assembled diverse group of volunteers to produce each of the eight sections of the report card corresponding to the eight segments of the infrastructure discussed above.
• Met with writers periodically and commented on interim versions of their sections.
• Collected drafts in preparation for incorporating them into a single coherent document.

During the next six months, the Long Island Infrastructure Report Card subcommittee will proceed with the following tasks:

• Edit and refine the collected draft sections and place them into a single document.
• Acquire photographs to accompany and amplify the data presented into the report.
• Assign grades to each of the infrastructure segments that mirror the methodology utilized by the National Report Committee.
• Provide draft report to a local review committee and to the National Report Committee for their comments.
• Address received comments.
• Produce the final report card.
• Coordinate with office of Congressman Israel and with other local representatives on the release of the report card.
• Develop media campaign in parallel with the prior action.
• Publish and distribute final report card in parallel with the press conference and media campaign.

The report card will be successful if by about mid-2012 the subcommittee successfully completes the above actions and has elicited a supportive response from the public, the media, from local agencies, civic and professional groups, and from elected officials.
